Many nights at a call center

Hey Kedar where are you working??

What do you do there??
Me:........

Sadly its true and im not afraid to admit it. I was ashamed of the fact that i worked in a call center.
Ive been thinking about it for a while now, why is it so demeaning to work in a call center? Its a full time job isnt it?? You have all the same tasks and duties and all the corporate hierarchy in a call center too. Why is a call center job frowned upon in our society?
While i was at wipro i was a technical support associate for HP...
When i applied for the job i expected it to be really easy and i heard it paid well. I worked there for about 5 months and it changed my whole perspective of things. I respect the guys that work there. The job i did wasnt as easy as they made it sound. It was just monotonous which is why i left.
The odd hours, the lack of long breaks, the constant need to be a 100% active for majority of your work hours. Trust me its not easy. I had to spend 9 hours a day glued to a headset and a computer navigating 10 different tools and at the same time worrying about a 100 different things, how do i fix it, i hope he gives me a good review, i wonder what i can say to avoid the dead air, please let him be one of those patient customers, hope ive documented it all correctly, will they give me a break.....
I had to instruct people in the US over the phone on how to fix any problem they had with their computers. So yeah each call lasted about an hour and its really challenging talking to a stranger for an hour, keeping him entertained and making sure he doesnt get mad or irritated, plus on top of that there are a billion things that can go wrong with a computer and its not easy figuring out a solution.
The only sad part is not a single person i know there liked what they do. I bet if you interviewed a 100 call takers there all of them would just say they are happy they have a job and it pays well.
Why do we look down upon it so?
Its a job right?
I respect them all. I might not have enjoyed it but it takes will power to do what these guys do everyday and night of their lives.
If you work in a call center dont hang your head in shame, be proud of what you do.
